Dark Light

Despite detractions from friends and foes, the label ‘apologist’ and the discipline of ‘apologetics’ is nothing to be ashamed of. Defending and commending the Christian hope is deeply biblical and a calling for all believers (1 Pet. 3:15). Whether through public debates, quiet conversations, or acts of faithful service, the way we express this calling will vary, reflecting the varied grace and gifts God gives each of us.

Whatever the expression, apologetics beings with preparation. Knowing your reasons begins with knowing God’s story and where you fit within it. Prayerful Biblical saturation and resulting theological formation are indispensable foundations for anyone engaging in apologetics. Without them, our defense lacks structural integrity; it risks becoming hollow, reactive, unstable—detached from the gospel in both truth and tone. Winning an argument is a hollow victory if it builds no bridge to the Saviour. The gospel needs no embellishment, only faithful witnesses who know its beauty and proclaim its coherence.

For all the poor examples of what apologetics can be, the answer isn’t to discard the term but to redeem it. To defend hope, we must live in its light; to share Christ, we must walk with Him. True apologetics is a witness to the transforming power of Christ’s love, spoken by those who have tasted and seen that the Lord is good.
