Dark Light

The Gospel of John is full of stunning reversals.

John 3 vs. John 4:

John 5 vs. John 9:

  • One is healed and disappears into the crowd.
  • The other is healed and steps into boldness.
  • One gives Jesus’ name to the authorities.
  • The other defends Jesus at great cost.
  • One receives physical healing but shows no sign of faith.
  • The other receives sight and ends in worship.

John 11 vs. John 12:

  • A tomb is opened and death reversed.
  • Burial perfume is poured and death anticipated.
  • Jesus weeps beside one grave.
  • He is honored before another.
  • Life blooms where death once reigned.

John 2 vs. John 13:

Water turns to wine in joyful celebration.

  • Feet are washed in quiet humility.
  • One marks the beginning of ministry.
  • The other prepares the way to the cross.
  • A public miracle.
  • A private act of love.

John 18 vs. John 20:

  • In one garden, Jesus is betrayed.
  • In another, He rises.
  • Darkness and confusion are swallowed by light and revelation.
  • Peter denies.
  • Jesus restores.

This is what Jesus does. He flips everything upside down—or maybe, finally, right-side up. No one is too high to be humbled. No one is too low to be lifted. In His story—and in those who believe—Resurrection always has the final word.

In the hands of Jesus, the last come first, the lost come home, and death itself dies.
