This list is a sampling of instances where Jesus can be shown to fulfil numerous messianic prophecies from the Old Testament. Each prophecy points toward the expected Messiah, and the New Testament writers clearly present Jesus as the ultimate fulfillment of those promises, from His birth to His death, resurrection, and ascension.
1. Born of a woman
- Prophecy: Messiah would be born of a woman (Gen. 3:15).
- Fulfillment: Jesus was born of Mary (Gal. 4:4).
2. Born in Bethlehem
- Prophecy: Messiah would be born in Bethlehem (Mic. 5:2).
- Fulfillment: Jesus was born in Bethlehem (Matt. 2:1; Luke 2:4-7).
3. Born of a virgin
- Prophecy: Messiah would be born of a virgin (Isa. 7:14).
- Fulfillment: Jesus was born of the Virgin Mary (Matt. 1:22-23; Luke 1:26-31).
4. From the line of Abraham
- Prophecy: Messiah would be a descendant of Abraham (Gen. 22:18).
- Fulfillment: Jesus was from the lineage of Abraham (Matt. 1:1).
5. Descendant of Isaac
- Prophecy: Messiah would be a descendant of Isaac (Gen. 21:12).
- Fulfillment: Jesus was from Isaac’s line (Luke 3:34).
6. Descendant of Jacob
- Prophecy: Messiah would come from Jacob’s lineage (Num. 24:17).
- Fulfillment: Jesus was from Jacob’s line (Matt. 1:2).
7. From the tribe of Judah
- Prophecy: Messiah would be from the tribe of Judah (Gen. 49:10).
- Fulfillment: Jesus was born of the tribe of Judah (Luke 3:33; Heb. 7:14).
8. Heir to King David’s throne
- Prophecy: Messiah would be heir to David’s throne (Isa. 9:7).
- Fulfillment: Jesus is called the Son of David (Luke 1:32-33; Matt. 1:1).
9. His throne would be eternal
- Prophecy: Messiah’s reign would last forever (2 Sam. 7:13).
- Fulfillment: Jesus’ kingdom is eternal (Luke 1:32-33).
10. Called Emmanuel
- Prophecy: Messiah would be called Emmanuel, meaning “God with us” (Isa. 7:14).
- Fulfillment: Jesus is God with us (Matt. 1:23).
11. Preceded by a forerunner
- Prophecy: A messenger would prepare the way for the Messiah (Isa. 40:3; Mal. 3:1).
- Fulfillment: John the Baptist prepared the way for Jesus (Matt. 3:1-3; John 1:23).
12. Ministry in Galilee
- Prophecy: Messiah would minister in Galilee (Isa. 9:1-2).
- Fulfillment: Jesus began His ministry in Galilee (Matt. 4:12-16).
13. He would perform miracles
- Prophecy: Messiah would perform miracles (Isa. 35:5-6).
- Fulfillment: Jesus healed the blind, deaf, and lame (Matt. 11:4-5; John 11:47).
14. He would teach in parables
- Prophecy: Messiah would teach using parables (Psa. 78:2).
- Fulfillment: Jesus taught in parables (Matt. 13:34-35).
15. He would enter Jerusalem on a donkey
- Prophecy: Messiah would enter Jerusalem on a donkey (Zech. 9:9).
- Fulfillment: Jesus entered Jerusalem on a donkey (Matt. 21:1-5).
16. Betrayed by a friend
- Prophecy: Messiah would be betrayed by a close friend (Psa. 41:9).
- Fulfillment: Judas betrayed Jesus (Matt. 26:14-16; John 13:18).
17. Betrayed for 30 pieces of silver
- Prophecy: Messiah would be sold for 30 pieces of silver (Zech. 11:12-13).
- Fulfillment: Judas sold Jesus for 30 pieces of silver (Matt. 26:15; 27:3-10).
18. Money used to buy a potter’s field
- Prophecy: The betrayal money would buy a potter’s field (Zech. 11:12-13).
- Fulfillment: The 30 pieces were used to buy the potter’s field (Matt. 27:9-10).
19. Falsely accused
- Prophecy: Messiah would be falsely accused (Psa. 35:11).
- Fulfillment: Jesus faced false accusations (Matt. 26:59-60).
20. Silent before His accusers
- Prophecy: Messiah would remain silent before His accusers (Isa. 53:7).
- Fulfillment: Jesus remained silent during His trial (Matt. 27:12-14; Mark 15:4-5).
21. Spat upon and struck
- Prophecy: Messiah would be spat upon and struck (Isa. 50:6).
- Fulfillment: Jesus was spat upon and beaten (Matt. 26:67).
22. Hated without cause
- Prophecy: Messiah would be hated without reason (Psa. 35:19; 69:4).
- Fulfillment: Jesus was hated without cause (John 15:24-25).
23. Crucified with criminals
- Prophecy: Messiah would be counted among sinners (Isa. 53:12).
- Fulfillment: Jesus was crucified between two thieves (Mark 15:27-28; Luke 22:37).
24. Hands and feet pierced
- Prophecy: Messiah’s hands and feet would be pierced (Psa. 22:16).
- Fulfillment: Jesus was crucified, nails driven through hands and feet (John 20:25-27).
25. Mocked and insulted
- Prophecy: People would mock the Messiah (Psa. 22:7-8).
- Fulfillment: Jesus was mocked and ridiculed (Matt. 27:31; Luke 23:35).
26. Given vinegar to drink
- Prophecy: Messiah would be given vinegar to drink (Psa. 69:21).
- Fulfillment: Jesus was given vinegar on the cross (Matt. 27:34; John 19:28-30).
27. His side pierced
- Prophecy: Messiah’s side would be pierced (Zech. 12:10).
- Fulfillment: Jesus’ side was pierced by a spear (John 19:34).
28. Soldiers cast lots for His clothing
- Prophecy: Soldiers would gamble for Messiah’s clothing (Psa. 22:18).
- Fulfillment: Soldiers cast lots for Jesus’ clothes (Matt. 27:35; John 19:23-24).
29. No bones broken
- Prophecy: None of Messiah’s bones would be broken (Psa. 34:20).
- Fulfillment: Jesus’ bones were not broken on the cross (John 19:33-36).
30. Buried with the rich
- Prophecy: Messiah would be buried in a rich man’s tomb (Isa. 53:9).
- Fulfillment: Jesus was buried in Joseph of Arimathea’s tomb (Matt. 27:57-60).
31. Resurrected from the dead
- Prophecy: Messiah would rise from the dead (Psa. 16:10; 49:15).
- Fulfillment: Jesus was resurrected on the third day (Matt. 28:5-7; Acts 2:22-32).
32. Ascended to heaven
- Prophecy: Messiah would ascend to heaven (Psa. 68:18).
- Fulfillment: Jesus ascended to heaven in the sight of His disciples (Acts 1:9-11).
33. Seated at the right hand of God’s right hand
- Fulfillment: Jesus is seated at the right hand of God (Mark 16:19; Heb. 1:3).
34. Messenger would prepare the way
- Prophecy: A messenger would prepare the way for the Messiah (Mal. 3:1).
- Fulfillment: John the Baptist prepared the way for Jesus (Matt. 3:1-3; Luke 1:17).
35. Light to the Gentiles
- Prophecy: The Messiah would bring light to the Gentiles (Isa. 42:6).
- Fulfillment: Jesus declared Himself the light of the world (John 8:12).
36. Messiah would be a sacrifice for sin
- Prophecy: Messiah would be a sacrifice for sin (Isa. 53:5-12).
- Fulfillment: Jesus was the sacrificial Lamb for sin (Rom. 5:8; 1 Pet. 1:18-19).
37. Rejected by His own people
- Prophecy: Messiah would be rejected by His own people (Isa. 53:3; Psa. 118:22).
- Fulfillment: Jesus was rejected by the Jewish leaders and people (John 1:11; Matt. 21:42).
38. Silent before His accusers
- Prophecy: Messiah would remain silent before His accusers (Isa. 53:7).
- Fulfillment: Jesus remained silent during His trial (Matt. 27:12-14; Mark 15:4-5).
39. Astonished by His suffering
- Prophecy: Many would be astonished at the suffering of the Messiah (Isa. 52:14).
- Fulfillment: The crowd marveled at Jesus’ suffering (Luke 23:35).
40. Called to bear our griefs and sorrows
- Prophecy: Messiah would bear our griefs and sorrows (Isa. 53:4).
- Fulfillment: Jesus took on our sin and suffering (Matt. 8:16-17).
41. Messiah would enter the temple
- Prophecy: Messiah would suddenly come to His temple (Mal. 3:1).
- Fulfillment: Jesus entered the temple and cleansed it (Matt. 21:12-13).
42. A stumbling block to the Jews
- Prophecy: Messiah would be a stumbling block for many (Isa. 8:14; Psa. 118:22).
- Fulfillment: Jesus became a stumbling block to the Jewish leaders (1 Pet. 2:7-8; Rom. 9:32-33).
43. God’s Spirit upon Him
- Prophecy: The Spirit of God would rest upon the Messiah (Isa. 11:2).
- Fulfillment: The Spirit descended on Jesus at His baptism (Matt. 3:16-17).
44. The Messiah would bring righteousness and peace
- Prophecy: Messiah would bring justice, righteousness, and peace (Isa. 9:7).
- Fulfillment: Jesus’ kingdom embodies these virtues (Rom. 5:1; Luke 4:18-19).
45. Messiah would be eternal
- Prophecy: Messiah’s reign would be everlasting (Dan. 7:14).
- Fulfillment: Jesus’ kingdom is eternal (Luke 1:32-33).
