Dark Light

I’ve been thinking a lot about how our doubts and longings can actually become reasons to worship. Here are some long time coming lyrics that grew out of that. 🙌

Reasons To Sing

© 2026 Dave Deane

Verse 1

If all of this is random
Why does my heart cry “true”?
Why does a simple act of kindness
Feel like it points beyond the room?
Why do I argue with my conscience
Like someone else is talking back?
Why does this law live inside me
Beyond my will or my fear?
If this is all just dust and motion,
Why does my heart resist the lie?

Chorus 1

God, You are the Truth my reason runs to
The solid ground beneath my doubt
You are the Voice behind my virtue
The quiet answer when I shout
My logic leads me to the altar
My deepest questions learn Your name
All of my thinking turns to worship
All of my reasons sing Your praise

Verse 2

If we’re just born wanting
Why is nothing ever enough?
Why does every dream I capture
Fade like mist beneath my touch?
I hunger past the harvest
I thirst beyond the rain
Joy tastes like a distant letter
From a home I’ve never known
If nothing here can hold my heart,
Why does it keep searching for more?

Chorus 2

God, You are the Home my longing runs to
The hidden country in my chest
You are the Giver behind my pleasure
The distant garden in my rest
My craving leads me to Your table
My empty places learn Your name
All of my yearning turns to worship
All of my aching sings Your praise

Verse 3

If love is an accident
Why does grief feel like a wound?
Why do we call it evil
If nature’s red in tooth and claw?
If death is just a veil
Why do we rage and cry?
Like losing a young child
Splits life: before and after
If cruelty is the whole of history,
Why would You choose to share this pain?

Chorus 3

God, I still have questions without answers
I still feel grief I can’t explain
But the cross stands over my sorrow
The empty tomb outshines the grave
I cannot trace the hand of heaven
Through every shadow, loss, and sting
But I have met the Man of Sorrows
And that is reason enough to sing

Chorus 4

God, You are the Christ my questions point to
The Word made flesh, the Light of life
You are the Love who entered our pain
And broke the back of death and sin
You are the Truth behind all longing
The Home my restless heart has known
You are the Judge who bore my judgment
And rose to claim me as Your own
